Mojo motivator of the month – The Defender

Defender

There are nine recognised intrinsic motivators. This month we focus upon ‘The Defender’.

Defenders need security. They need to believe that what they are doing is contributing to a solid and predictable future. Defenders tend to be risk-averse and seek assurance and re-assurance.

If you have employees for which the above resonates, then you may wish to consider the following motivation strategies on an individual, team or organisation-wide basis.

Individual (What they can proactively do)

  • Actively find information relevant to their role - attend briefings, scan notice boards, check publications, websites and emails - to stay ahead of the game
  • Plan their future: both in the short, medium and long term
  • Be clear about the organisation’s mission and vision to decipher how they can contribute to its success
  • Ensure they have plenty of routine in their work
  • Keep a tidy workspace, to create a greater sense of order

Team (How the manager and colleagues can support)

  • Stress team values and co-operation
  • Define roles and responsibilities within the team clearly - remove ambiguity
  • Create and publish plans
  • Create an environment where dependability is par for the course

Organisation (What high-level activities can support)

  • Link organisational goals and achievement to personal security
  • Reward and value loyalty and faithful service
  • Communicate – especially good news - about the organisation and how it’s doing
  • Provide perks that tap into the need for security – health care provisions, pension enhancements, loyalty scheme.

The employee survey results are in—now what?

Employee surveys fail when leaders are not seen to be acting upon the results. Sometimes this is because they choose to do nothing with them; other times they take action, but fail to communicate success stories. So, it is vital to share progress with your employees.
